Real vs. Faux (Faux-Lux) Jewelry — What’s the Difference?

Real jewelry is always a great investment. Gold, silver, and natural gemstones carry true commodity value, and their worth can rise over time. But high-quality faux jewelry — especially vintage pieces — can also gain value when well cared for.

Two longtime collector favorites are Monet and Trifari, both known for exceptional craftsmanship and timeless design. Many faux-lux designers, such as Swarovski and Kenneth Jay Lane, created pieces worn by notable public figures and celebrities. Sometimes, it’s actually hard to tell the difference between fine jewelry and well-made faux-lux.

When buying vintage faux jewelry, take a close look at:

  • Wear to the metal or plating

  • The condition of the hinges and clasps

  • Missing or replaced stones

  • Overall craftsmanship and design

Well-preserved faux jewelry can be just as exciting to collect — and can hold surprising value for years to come.
